Public Debate Last weekend (21/22 March) 100 randomly selected UK citizens debated Europe’s response to the financial crisis with politicians and experts at the European Citizens’ Consultation 2009 in London. 100 citizens came up with 10 policy recommendations which will be given to decision-makers in Brussels.

drop the ex-Part III from the Treaties and move it into the acquis

The European Union should drop ex-Part III (the part about the economy) and demote the corresponding parts of the treaties into the acquis, which we can then work on with non-constitutional means, say in the European Parliament; namely, demote what would have become the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union into the acquis, and pass the Treaty on European Union (ex-Parts I and IV) plus the Charter of Fundamental Rights (ex-Part II).

EU citizens right to vote

The voting rights of all EU citizens should be harmonized and as EU citizens we should be able to choose to vote in our country of residence within the EU. At the moment as EU citizens living in another EU member state we only have the right to vote in Council and European elections.

Improve European Democracy!

The Citizens’ Initiative - first set out in the Constitutional Treaty - should be enacted immediatley to open a new channel for democratic participation in Europe and help to create the public realm the EU badly needs. The Citizens' Initiative stipulates that a petition with at least one million signatures obtained from a number of Member States may be sent to the Commission inviting it to take a legislative initiative, provided the latter is compatible with the EU's rules and principles.

A Clean Sweep

A clean sweep of the UK-sponsored EU fraud and corruption, starting with the 'Objective 1' frauds. Before any substantive progress can be made, citizens must have confidence that the EU is the right organisation in which to place trust for the future. Currently, this trust can not placed, not least because of the massive EU-wide multi-million pound fraud and corruption and the failure to achieve an unqualified independent audit that is able to sign off the EU's books.
