Public Debate Last weekend (21/22 March) 100 randomly selected UK citizens debated Europe’s response to the financial crisis with politicians and experts at the European Citizens’ Consultation 2009 in London. 100 citizens came up with 10 policy recommendations which will be given to decision-makers in Brussels.

Launched by the European magazine cafebabel.com, EUdebate2009.eu is an independent internet site, the first web 2.0 platform to get the opinion leaders of the people of Europe talking with European political parties.

The European Citizens’ Consultation 2009 (ECC09) website launches today (03 December) in the UK giving citizens the opportunity to discuss the future of Europe. The website is managed by Involve; the UK national partner in the ECC 2009 process. In the run-up to the 2009 Euro-elections ECC 2009 will give citizens a voice in the debate over how to respond to the current economic and financial crisis.

Let's stop pussyfooting about and declare what the true intentions are for our future superstate, let's not wait for the legalities to be settled. For years the commission has been run like the old politburo, in secrecy and to its own agenda. Well, this has to stop. People have to understand the new realities, and calling a spade an implement of the people, is where it is all at.

Toys representing weapon, tanks of attack, muscular heroes throwing out the submachine guns are the sad inheritance of an epoch when to educate a boy was first to make a soldier. Let us cease teaching war our children! Improve European Democracy!

The Citizens’ Initiative - first set out in the Constitutional Treaty - should be enacted immediatley to open a new channel for democratic participation in Europe and help to create the public realm the EU badly needs. The Citizens' Initiative stipulates that a petition with at least one million signatures obtained from a number of Member States may be sent to the Commission inviting it to take a legislative initiative, provided the latter is compatible with the EU's rules and principles.

Introduce Esperanto as a foreign language subject in European high schools

It has been proved scientifically in Paderborn, Germany, that Esperanto being taught as a first foreign language has propaedeutic value regarding other languages (students who study Esperanto first, as a foreign language, learn other languages more easily and quicker). If all the countries in Europe would commit themselves to teaching Esperanto at high school level, in a few years, billions could be saved in translations and printing of documents, and the youth could travel more freely within Europe, without having to learn many languages.

To realise a continuous and precise course of studies concerning the European Union, the same for all the member states, good for all schools of all types in every country. This would help students to be aware of being European citizens, understanding dynamics and developments, supporting a juridical and social culture as a results of a study and a knowledge of historical stages which brought to the need of the union of today’s member states.
