The continued maintenance and upgrade of nuclear weaponary is a financial burden that is difficult to jutify. Britain, having suffered financially since entering the race to become and to remain a nuclear power, now has some 200+ sea based warheads in addition to others.

The myth of them being a deterent to other nations against attack has long since been busted and there can be little or no justification for our continued possession of them. There is no-one who is ever likely to use them against us other than as a terrorist attack just as there is no likelyhood of our using them against anyone even in defence. They are obsolete and redundant.

The Obama administration has made committments to halting further proliferation of nuclear weapons and nuclear materials and we should support that desire by eliminating the British and other European nations weaponary.

A quick search of Wikipedia will show that the dangers of these weapons do not come from other nations or terrorists but from simply being a nuclear power. The number of accidents that have happened with these weapons and other nuclear facilities is truely frightening, there have been dozens of accident that could have resulted in greater disasters then Chernoble and Three mile Island.

We could offer other nuclear powers a trade of 1 for 1 and ask them to disarm one of theirs to one of ours. This includes America, Russia and all other nuclear powers. This would reduce the threat and dangers presented by the weapons significantly without increasing the possibility of hightening any danger we face real or imaginary.

We should take a lead on this issue and cease to be a nuclear power.
